Transferring a Domain to a New Registrar

By Admin · Feb 25, 2026 · Updated Apr 23, 2026 · 27 views · 1 min read

Before You Start

  • Domain must be older than 60 days
  • Domain must not have been transferred in the last 60 days
  • Domain must be unlocked at current registrar
  • You need access to the admin email on file

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Unlock the domain at your current registrar
  2. Get the EPP/Auth code — request it from your current registrar's panel
  3. Initiate transfer at the new registrar — provide the domain name and auth code
  4. Confirm the transfer — you will receive an email at the admin contact, approve it
  5. Wait for completion — transfers typically take 5-7 days

DNS During Transfer

Your DNS records continue to work during the transfer. However, to avoid any disruption:

  • Set up the same DNS records at the new registrar before initiating
  • Lower TTL values 48 hours before the transfer
  • Verify DNS is working after transfer completes

Common Issues

  • Transfer rejected — domain may be locked or auth code expired
  • Admin email bouncing — update WHOIS email before transferring
  • Premium domain surcharge — some domains have premium renewal pricing
